NB: The pathos here is twofold, a transparent attempt to deceive; and an equally transparent ambition. The Pahalgam terrorist attack was a horrible and inhuman crime; and its perpetrators have not yet been arrested. However, the resultant outrage included expressions of communal hatred. These were referred to by none other than a bereaved person, the newly married widow of one of the victims. She called for harmony, and for people not to target Indian Muslims, but was viciously abused for her humane reaction. This abuse was so hateful (she was accused of defending terrorists) that the National Commission for Women felt it necessary to defend her. The Hon’ble MP from Thiruvananthapuram is intelligent enough to know these facts; and it would have done him no harm had he mentioned them. Max Weber’s memorable lecture on Politics as a Vocation delivered in 1919 contrasted the ethics of conviction with the ethics of responsibility. The Hon’ble MP is endowed with neither. DS

A news report dated May 25, 2025, cites Mr Tharoor as follows: He also said that while the intent behind the Pahalgam terror attack was to divide people, it brought people together in India, irrespective of their religion or any other divide. There was an extraordinary amount of togetherness cutting across religious and other divides that people have tried to provoke. The message is very clear that there was a malign intent… India, sadly, had no reason to doubt where it came from.
The factual position, on the contrary, is that the ghastly killings in Pahalgam almost instantaneously triggered a sharp spike in the violence against minority Muslims in general and Kashmirirs in particular all over the country — mostly orchestrated by the members of the Hindutva Brigade. Here’s a partial list:
The most egregious one, however, is, arguably, when Col. Sophia Qureshi, a Muslim woman officer, who had been chosen by the Indian armed forces to lead a crucial press briefing as regards the Operation Sindoor, would be referred to with evident contempt as a “sister of the terrorists” just because of her religion by a BJP minister from Madhya Pradesh, in a public meeting.
Almost equally so was that, during more or less the same time, a very senior academic of considerable repute was sent behind the bars, on the face of it, primarily because of his Muslim identity, for a pretty scholarly blog he had posted on the social media.
