You can oppose Israel’s policies without killing Jewish people

NB: Most of what this author writes is rational and humane. The violent attacks on Jewish Americans simply for being Jews is a horrible crime. The concepts of collective guilt and the inter-generational transfer of guilt are poisonous doctrines. Antisemitism is one of these, and began as a Christian form of bigotry. Its roots lie in centuries of Christian attribution of responsibility for Jesus’ crucifixion to the entire Jewish community. This is what we in India name communalism – the segregation of good and evil by collective identity rather than individual conscience.

However I disagree with these phrases: ‘a delegitimizing ideology about “settler colonialism” the wishful erasure of Israel as a state by proclaiming support for a future Palestine.’ How else than ‘settler colonialism‘ may we describe a state project based on the violent expulsion in 1948 of 760,000 Palestinians from their native lands? This violence did not begin on October 7, 2023, as the author knows. And the erasure that has been taking place is not that of Israel but of the entire Palestinian people. It is a century-long prolonged genocide, enabled by Western governments. The real ‘delegitimizing ideology’ is that the Bible is a title deed to land; and that all of us are obliged to accept it. The Shoah was a crime committed by the Nazi regime, not the Palestinian people; and many of the American MAGA brigade are open or covert Nazis, who simultaneously use ‘antisemitism’ to crush all dissent.

The number of Palestinians killed since October 7 is supposedly 55,000; and if you include the missing, possibly much higher. The injured number 125,000. Tens of thousands of women and children killed, maimed, traumatized for life. How would the Western world react if 10,000 white Americans were cordoned off and slaughtered? Why are some of us treated like grass to be mowed down and burnt alive by the ‘most moral army in the world’?

Having said this, I salute all Jewish people, including many Israeli’s who take a stand against the brutality unleashed by the Israeli state. But I fear the trauma of this mass crime will last for decades. DS

It happened again. The third time this year that Jewish people were attacked with murderous intent in a major US city under the guise of the assailant caring about the plight of the Palestinians in Gaza. It’s the second time that fires were set. The first happened when an attacker – a US citizen – broke into the official residence of Pennsylvania’s governor in Harrisburg, on the evening of Passover and set fire to the residence. The only thing that saved governor Josh Shapiro and his family was a quick response from security guards, leaving only some Passover Haggadahs, the text that charts Jewish hopes for freedom and liberation from one generation to the next, to burn on the tables still set from dinner.

About two weeks ago, there was the murder of two innocent Jewish Israeli embassy workers who were attending an event hosted by the The American Jewish Committee at the Jewish Museum in Washington DC on how to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza; these young people were chosen at random from a crowd apparently targeted intentionally since the murderer, again a US citizen, appeared to have wanted to hunt down and kill Jews in response to Israel – a sovereign country’s – military acts. Tellingly, the gunman had a brief association to the far-left Party of Socialism and Liberation (PSL said in a statement that he is not a member and that his association with the group ended in 2017)….
