The Solution: Bertolt Brecht

NB: In 1953, eight years after the end of the Second World War and the partition of Germany, there took place an uprising of workers against abysmal working conditions and low wages in the Communist-ruled German Democratic Republic. The uprising was brutally crushed, and soon afterwards the famous left-wing playright and poet Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956), wrote these lines; perhaps the best ironic description of tyranny, of whichever political hue. They also have meaning for what is taking place in India today. DS

After the uprising of the 17th June
The Secretary of the Writers Union
Had leaflets distributed in the Stalinallee
Stating that the people
Had forfeited the confidence of the government
And could win it back only
By redoubled efforts. Would it not be easier
In that case for the government
To dissolve the people
And elect another?
