Nawada lynching mocks ‘The rule of law’ / Bangladesh Lynching Condemned

NB: This heinous incident is one of many such, that have been visible in India and the countries of South Asia for many years. It indicates nothing less than the blatant encouragement and deployment of mob rule by the ruling classes of India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar. Pakistan is now not just a de facto military dictatorship (which it always was), but a de jure military tyranny, useful (as it always was) to the USA. In India, which never fully recovered from the mass rioting of 1946-48; it unfolded with ferocity in 1984, 2002 and in numerous incidents of murder and lynching since 2013. In Bangladesh, mass violence was never controlled after the emergence of the new state in 1971-72; the military murdered Mujibur Rahman (who by then was committed to single party rule) and his family in 1975. The CIA was accused of involvement by the intrepid American reporter Lawrence Lifshultz. Systematic killings of ideological opponents have never ended; now we see the emergence of openly communal politics once again. The Hasina regime was never committted to the rule of law anyway.

The mobs rule all over this sub-continent, and it need not be stressed enough that they do so with the shameless connivance of the ruling establishments.

Scholars of history and political science could and should study this elephant in the drawing room, but I doubt they will. Four intellectuals were murdered around the time this regime came to power and a great many other terrible violations of justice have taken place since then, too numerous to mention. The hooliganism on Christmas day is just one example; and the lynching of this poor cloth dealer another. We know from past experience that justice will not be done. The impact on society can be imagined. This is not the rule of law but the rule of mobs, money and ideological tyrants. You can either speak up, as this open statement shows, or you can keep quiet and pretend that this is what we expect and require. We are the VishwaGuru, after all.

Rest in Peace Athar; we bow our heads in shame – DS

19th December 2025

We all know that the continuous propagation of divisive politics and glorification of hate is resulting in incidents of hate and violence every other day. Also it’s a grave concern that these incidents have become so normalized to the extent that they have been taken as the new norm of the present times.

One such incident occurred in Nawada, Bihar, where 40-year-old cloth hawker/Feriwala Mohammad Athar Hussain , was allegedly lynched by group assailants after being asked about his religion. In a video recorded Athar Hussain said that assailants first asked his name, stripped him to check his private parts, confirmed his religious identity, used pliers to crush his fingers and cut his ears, they dragged him mercilessly, burnt him with hot iron rods, poured petrol on his body and subjected him to extreme inhuman torture. He later succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment in the hospital. He was the sole bread earner of the family.

This does not seem to be an “accidental crime” however – it is a planned, inhuman and barbaric example of mob lynching, and also a horrific example of the utter failure of “The Rule of law”. This along with all such incidents of hate in recent years openly mock the law enforcing agencies on their failure to ensure the constitutional safeguard guaranteed under the provisions of the Indian constitution. These incidents also pose a challenge to the very existence of such agencies.

Hate-filled politics, venomous primetimes and glorification of violence are the main reason for this brutality. It has been a long time since the Supreme Court issued guidelines on both lynching and hate speeches. However there seems to be no cognizance by authorities and contempt of these directions is happening every other day. On the other hand, The work of spreading hate and malice continues unchecked to the extent that Governments have begun filing applications for the withdrawal of cases against those accused in such acts of violence like the Akhlaq lynching case.

Isn’t the failure to take  suo motu cognizance on continued incidents of hatred based on religious, caste, linguistic, regional and gender based identities a supreme neglect of the citizens of the country? And a failure to ensure JUSTICE, LIBERTY and EQUALITY as mentioned in the preamble and a failure to  promote the unity and integrity of the Nation.

All such incidents are extremely disturbing, worrying and shameful at the same time. No amount of condemnation can equate or substitute the grave need of assurance and delivery of justice in each of such incident

We undersigned and concerned citizens of India appeal that

  1. Justice must be ensured  to the deceased via a fast-track court,
  2. The accused must be given the harshest punishment.
  3. The family must be ensured safety for all the threats.
  4. Member of the deceased’s family must be ensured with a government job.
  5. The responsibility for the education of the victims’ children up to college level should be taken care of.
  6. The bereaved family should be helped with a minimum compensation of Rs 1crore.

 We also appeal that

  1. Suo Motu cognizance on the continued ,unchecked rather nourished incidents of hate speech and violence including   lynching.
  2. Hate speeches ,hate promoting films and venomous channels must controlled
  3. Officials who are found negligent in such incidents of hatred must be held accountable.
  4. State and Central governments should be summoned regarding compliance with the directives issued on lynching and hate speech, and strict orders should be given to ensure its implementation.
  5. Status reports must be asked from the states on the actions taken to ensure justice and compensation provided till date to the victims of any hate crime during the past 10 years.
  6. Organizations spreading violence and hatred in the country should be identified and banned.

Bangladesh Lynching Condemned

Dipu Chandra Das, a 25 year youth from Baluka area of Mymensingh district Bangladesh , worked at a garment factory. He was lynched outside a garment factory where he worked for allegedly over alleged blasphemy on 18 December 2025. Reports say the factory floor manager handed him over to the mob, The mob dragged him, beat him to death outside the factory, hung his body from a tree and burnt his wounded body also, the entire incident was live-streamed by the mob.

It’s been observed that since the regime change in August, incidents of violence against minorities are continuously increasing in Bangladesh. Communalism and violence are continuously being promoted and fueled by fundamentalist groups. So far ten accused have been arrested two days after the murder post international outrage on the incident

No word or amount of condemnation is enough for this horrific incident of lynching and the continuous attacks on minorities in Bangladesh. We condemn this brutal lynching and ongoing attacks on minorities and demand:-

·         Bangladesh authorities must arrest all the culprits and ensure strict punishment to all the assailants.

·         Stop violence against Hindu, Christian, and Buddhist minorities must be stopped immediately. And safety must be ensured to all the minority groups

·         Individuals and organizations fueling communal hate must be controlled

·         We appeal to all citizens of Bangladesh to remain vigilant against communal political provocations and maintain harmony across religious and cultural boundaries.

·         We appeal to Bangladesh’s civil society and social organizations to mediate, take necessary steps and interventions to create an appropriate environment for the safety of all minorities.

·         We appeal to the youth of Bangladesh to come forward and stand with all Bangladeshi minorities and stand for their safety.

·         We appeal to the Government of India to take cognizance of the increasing violence against Hindu, Christian and Buddhist minorities in the neighboring country and strongly raise the issue of their safety with the Government of Bangladesh.
