India’s strategic autonomy faces its acid test in West Asia / ये विषगुरू ने अमेरिका से इजाजत मांगी ही क्यों

NB: The BJP/RSS rulers shout from the rooftops about their ‘deshbhakti’ (nation-worship); and the iron will of their leaders. But their foreign policy – unlike Nehruvian non-alignment – has always been guided by a hatred of socialism coupled with pro-Western alliances. They supported the American imperialist aggression in Vietnam as a ‘dharm-yuddha‘ or holy war. And their economic policy under the Modi regime is deregulation coupled with brazen crony capitalism. Iran was India’s strategic ally, but the assassination of Iran’s head of state does not merit even a message of regret from this government; not to mention the sinking of an Iranian naval vessel a short distance from the Indian coast. India could not even rescue drowning sailors – the Sri Lankans were not so timid.

This is what we have come to, this is our ultra patriotic establishment at work. Embracing the war criminal Netanyahu and his genocidal regime without a word of sorrow for the tens of thousands of Palestinians slaughtered over two years. Many Israelis protested, but not our Great Leader. And asking American permission to buy Russian oil. There are two things in common between Trump, Netanyahu and our Great Leader: the love of absolute power combined with the total absence of sympathy for suffering humanity. Apparently the muscles of the Sangh Parivar are best employed against defenceless Indian citizens. Shame on you. DS

Energy dependence and diaspora vulnerability make India’s neutrality harder to sustain

Does India stand in danger of being indirectly pulled into the ongoing conflict in West Asia? Two recent incidents prompt such worries: a claim by a United States commentator that US Navy ships were using Indian ports for logistics, and the sinking of an Iranian navy ship IRIS Dena, in the international waters of the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Sri Lanka.

These incidents need to be unpacked before addressing other factors that might also pull India into the conflict. India has dismissed the claim of George MacGregor, a retired US Army colonel who worked as an adviser to the Pentagon, that the US Navy was now using Indian ports for docking and logistics facilities. He had claimed that this had become necessary as US naval facilities in West Asia — such as in Bahrain and Oman — had been damaged.

The Ministry of External Affairs has described MacGregor’s claim on a Right-wing US channel, One America News, as “fake and false”, and “baseless and fabricated.” That India needed to issue such a denial shows how strategically sensitive the optics of this war have become. India did not want to be seen as taking the US-Israeli side in their war against Iran….
