Have you submitted documents during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process to retain your name on the electoral roll? Well, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has now introduced a new process in Delhi that allows voters to establish their eligibility without submitting any documents. The ECI is forcing booth level officers (BLOs) to sign off on voters without conducting the required verification, in violation of the law.
Here’s how it is put into practice.
The existence of this new ‘certificate’ came to light through WhatsApp directives issued to BLOs in the national capital. We cross-checked the use of these certificates across at least five constituencies in Delhi.
First, lakhs of people were put through an extensive verification exercise and made to run from pillar to post with their documents. Now, as protests gain ground in Delhi, this new process quietly opens a route for voters whose eligibility the system itself had flagged for scrutiny to be cleared without submitting documents.
What then, was the point of the SIR? And why is the responsibility for clearing these names without scrutiny being shifted onto BLOs? Read our full story here:
Delhi SIR: ECI Forcing BLOs to Sign Off on Voters Without Verification
