Anjali Bhardwaj: The SIR Decision the Election Commission Says It Never Made | The Probe
5 Aug 2026 NEW DELHI The Election Commission of India says the decision to launch the SIR “was not taken” by the Commission itself. So who did take it? RTI campaigner Anjali Bhardwaj lays out what the Election Commission will not disclose — and why it matters for every voter. Speaking in New Delhi, Anjali Bhardwaj traces a pattern of secrecy at the heart of India’s electoral machinery: the refusal to release Form 17C, the rules changed overnight after a High Court ordered disclosure, the “no information exists in material form” reply to RTI queries on the SIR, and the crores of names struck off the voter rolls by an algorithm nobody has seen. Her central question is simple, and unanswered: if the Election Commission did not order the Special Intensive Revision, who did — the Ministry of Home Affairs, or somewhere else entirely? This is a story about transparency, accountability and the right to information — and about what happens to a democracy when its umpire stops answering to the people.
