Israel: Protest against settler terror. By Ira Berkovic

“Write my name on my leg, Mama”

On Friday, July 24, settlers carried out a violent raid on Palestinian homes in Tal, near Nablus. Four Palestinians were killed, and two Israeli settlers also died in retaliatory clashes. A week earlier, settlers had set fire to a house in Tal with residents inside. This type of pogrom is becoming increasingly typical across the West Bank, as armed settlers, encouraged by the state, seek to impose a regime of Israeli-Jewish supremacy across the territory, and to force Palestinians out of their homes.

In response to the events in Tal, the Israeli army launched an operation that led to nearly 50 arrests – not of violent settlers, but of Palestinians. Approximately 70 Palestinian homes were searched.

The raids sparked protests in Israel. On Saturday, July 25, the Democratic Front for Peace and Equality, known by its Hebrew acronym Hadash , held a demonstration in Tel Aviv. Nine people were arrested. Hadash MK Ofer Cassif told The New Arab: “We organized the Tel Aviv demonstration because we refuse to remain silent while state-sanctioned settler terror and government escalation inflame the occupied West Bank […] The police have increasingly become a politicized militia that protects violent settlers while using brute force to silence peaceful citizens protesting for human rights. The arrest of nine protesters in Tel Aviv is a blatant attempt to criminalize dissent and protect government-backed extremism.”

“The dominant political and media discourse continues to whitewash state aggression. However, video evidence makes it harder to deny the truth. A growing and courageous joint Jewish-Arab camp is realizing that settler violence is not a ‘marginal issue’ – it is a basic tool of state policy designed to dispossess Palestinians.”

On July 28, a coalition of anti-occupation organizations led by Standing Together organized another demonstration against settler violence. Standing Together stated: “We did not take to the streets just because of settler violence – we were also protesting against our extremist government that supports and funds this terror.”

“Not only does this make daily life unbearable for many Palestinians in the West Bank, but it also makes each of us less safe and poses a threat to our future. There can never be peace when our government, in order to maintain its grip on power, relies on inciting endless violence against Palestinians and increasingly encourages violence across the land.”

“That’s why our protest was so powerful. It proved that our fight against this terrifying reality is growing, that people will not accept this as inevitable, that they will fight for peace, equality and justice because they know it’s the only way.”
